Daily question for Nov. 30, 2017

During a stability test on a small passenger vessel __________.     A. the vessel must be moored snugly   B. each tank must be partially full to show it does not leak     C. all dunnage, tools, and extraneous items are secured   D. water under vessel must be deep enough to prevent grounding

Daily Question for Nov. 29, 2017

Which statement about the free surface effect is TRUE?     A. It increases in direct proportion to the length of the tank times the breadth squared.     B. It decreases at increased angles of heel due to pocketing when a tank is 90% full.     C. It decreases in direct proportion to increasing specific gravity of the liquid in the tank.     D. In practice, the correction is considered to be a virtual reduction of KG

In order to minimize the effects of a tender vessel, when carrying a cargo of lumber, you should__________. A. maximize your deck load B. distribute lumber so that those stowing most compactly per unit of weight are in the upper holds C. place the heaviest woods in the lower holds D. keep the vessel's frame spaces free from lumber

Daily Question for Nov. 22, 2017

Double Interpolation: You have an Allowable Heeling Moment Table that gives you values of AHMs for a Displacement of 55,000 MT of 56,568 m-mt for a VCG of 9.0 m and 32,239 m-mt for a VCG of 11.0 m; and for a Displacement of 65,000 MT of 65,440 m-mt for a VCG of 9.0 m and 36,688 m-mt for a VCG of 11.0 m. What is the value of AHM for a Displacement of 60,000 MT with a VCG of 10.0 m?

About this Blog: Why am I doing this?

I am moving to this new site for a new start. No, I have not retired from National Cargo Bureau, nor has this anything to with NCB. I just think people need to have some knowledge in their heads, professional or otherwise. After 2007 our world has changed due to the advent of Smart Phones. In the past 10 years there is now a new generation that is machine dependent or app dependent with barely any basic resident knowledge. The cause is simple if you do not use it you will lose it! The questions I post with will hopefully help you keep what you already or remind you of what you should know. The secret of being able to improvise when dealing with the unexpected is to know your subjects forward and backwards. Sadly, schools normally only teach from the top down, that is what computes and apps do. To have a full command of any subject so you can improvise you need to be able to do it in reverse order. This is what I call Old School. As a deck cadet in the 1960's I was amazed ...

The point to which G may rise and still permit the vessel to possess positive stability. C. The sum of the center of buoyancy and the center of gravity. D. The transverse shift of the center of buoyancy as a vessel rolls.
