Daily Question for Dec. 28, 2017

Your vessel's draft is 24'-06" forward and aft. The MT1 of your vessel is 1000 ft-tons. How many tons of cargo must be loaded in number 4 hold, which is 100 feet abaft the tipping center, if she is to have a 2 foot drag? (Note: drag = trim by stern), (tipping center = LCF)

A. 120 tons

B. 240 tons

C. 300 tons

D. 480 tons

Comments

  1. Change of trim = (weight x distance from LCF)/MT1

Solve for weight = (Change of trim x MT1)/(distance from LCF)

The trick is to use the proper units.

    MT1 is in Ft-tons/inch
Distance from LCF is in feet
Change of trim is in inches!

    So, weight =
    (24 inches)x(1000 Ft-tons/inch)/ (100 ft)
    = 240 tons

    The best answer is B.
