Daily Question for Jan 14, 2018

A vertical shift of weight to a position above the vessel's center of gravity will __________.

A. increase reserve buoyancy

B. decrease the righting moments

C. decrease KG

D. increase KM

Comments

  1. B is the best answer because an increase in KG will decrease GM and therefore GZ.
    Righting moment = displacement x GZ :

    Also:
A shift of weight will not affect reserve buoyancy because the freeboards will not change.
    KG will actually Increase.
KM will remain the same if drafts and freeboards do not change.

A simple sketch may help you to see this.
