The effect of free surface on initial stability depends upon __________.
A. the amount of liquid in the compartment
B. the dimensions of the liquid surface and the vessel's displacement

ReplyDeleteA.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the USCG the best answer is B.
ReplyDeleteFS correction = lb^3/12 (Displaced Volume)
The dimensions of the liquid surface is accounted for by l and b above.
"l' being the length of the liquid surface
"b" being the width of the liquid surface
The "Displaced Volume" is a function of Displacement.
For metric units displacement in metric tonnes x 1.025 = Displaced Volume in cubic meters.
For English units displacement in Long Tons x 35 cubic feet /LT = Displaced Volume in cubic feet.
So, the dimensions of the liquid surface and the vessel's displacement all play a role in determining the Free Surface Correction.
Bravo.
