Jan. 3rd Question Sketch: I always find it easier to see the answer if you can sketch the vessel inclined and plot G acting downward and B acting upward.

  1. To sketch GZ the trick is not to draw the vessel upright. If the vessel is upright with no angle of heel or list then GZ = 0 because there is no horizontal distance between the upward force of B and the downward force of G. It may be helpful for the student to make a template of a midships section so that it is easier to sketch at different angle of inclination.
