Daily Question for March 1, 2018

If your vessel has a list to port due to negative GM and off-center weight, the first corrective measure you should take is to __________.

A. move port-side main deck cargo to the starboard side

B. fill the starboard double-bottom

C. pump water from the port double-bottom to the starboard double-bottom

D. pump water from the port double-bottom over the side

  2. B is the best choice. You want to lower G without causing the vessel to flop to the other side. True this will initially increase the list/angle of loll, but as G moves down and GM turns positive the inclination will be a "list" not an "angle" of loll so you can work to correct it by moving G to the centerline of the vessel.

    In a previous question "sharp21" on February 22nd's Question wrote
    "With a negative GM you’ve got to make it worse before you can make it better"

    Angle of list is mentioned in STABILITY AND TRIM FOR THE SHIP'S OFFICER, 4th Ed., on pages 43 and 127. A small negative GM can produce a large "angle of list"!

    You want to lower "G"
    Filling up a double bottom tank, would do that.
