Daily Question for March 5, 2018

The free surface effects of a partially-full tank in a floating MODU increase with the __________.
(MODU = "Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit", Hint it floats so it behaves like a ship!)

A. surface area of the fluid in the tank

B. displacement volume of the MODU

C. draft of the MODU

D. height of the tank above the keel

Comments

  1. Same Free Surface Formula

    FS = lb^3/12 x Displaced Volume

    A. is the best answer. If surface areas increases so does FS.
    B. and C. Both False, if displacement increases FS decreases
    D. Irrelevant, however the weight of the liquid will affect KG depending on if you can actually move the tank higher. The free surface will not change.

  2. See Stability and Trim for the Ship's Officer, 4th Ed. Chapter 8,, FREE SURFACE, pages 161 to 171.

    Here is a video about free surface correction. Be patient and you will see it is the same as above only done a little differently.

  3. ANS: ALPHA

    The width of the tank will effect it the most.

    I've seen the use of "slosh plates" to help minimize the effects.
    Makes working in the tank or tank cleaning rather difficult.
